bi-racial buddiez! is a set of modular dolls. there is an asian, black, and white doll. each of the dolls has removable body parts: head, legs, arms and feet. to create a doll that is 75% asian and 25% white, simply attach 1 white leg & 1 white arm to the asian doll. to create a 40% black & 60% asian doll, attach appendages to the body as you see fit to create your own bi-racial buddy!

the exciting aspect of these dolls is realizing their true modularity. not only can you create dolls of multiple races, you can also create mutant dolls made only of arms & legs with no head, or dolls with multiple heads and no appendages. in creating fully modular doll components, you can actually break free of the traditional doll form altogether. in future versions, i would like to make modular dolls that would include modular gender as well as race.

with bi-racial buddiez!, i played on the notion of modular ethnicity or persona. in exploring the notion of representing your race through appendages of different colors, i am trying to break down the notion that ethnicity or persona is modular. even though i may emphasize certain behaviors when around iranians as opposed to whites, or when around adults as compared to children, this does not necessarily mean the components of my personality could neatly be broken down into simple modules, such as one brown arm & one white one to represent my bi-racialness. even the notion of bi-racial is too compartmentalized for the society i live in today- i am multiracial as most everyone is.
