geothenergy
geothenergy is a sound piece constructed from field recordings of geothermal energy in yellowstone national park.
energy is beyond us and is us. thinking about it makes me think of an ever-presence, an infinite, and a finite. a visible and an invisible. when traveling across the american west this summer with mike, we recorded sounds of natural energy such as air, water, wind, and geothermal activity. the infinite nature of the energy- its longevity, its ability to sustain and its prevalence all over the globe. in the presence of geothermal activity, the earth splits open and you get a glimpse of the process happening beneath the surface all the time. this reminded me of the subway in new york- we don’t think about its presence until we feel its energy rising from the grates, hear it, or go underground to commute. similarly, i’m never aware of the process of my body’s inner workings until there’s a gash and my blood flows.
in geothenergy, i wanted to explore this interior space of the earth by taking the different chunks of activity: mud pots (bubbling), fumaroles (steam/breath), geyser activity (eruption), bacterial mat streams (blood) and creating my own explosion of energy from the sounds- a geyser eruption.
I want to do more with this composition: create energy with the sound piece itself. through gathering the sound in piezo mics and converting it into heat energy, the geothermal energy conveyed in the sound piece would actually create heat, even if it’s only a small amount.
